The inaugural Ramoji Excellence Awards 2025 was held at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. Amla Ashok Ruia, known as the Water Mother of India, was honoured with an award for ‘Excellence in Rural Development’.

Who is Amla Ashok Ruia?
Ms Ruia runs Aakar Charitable Trust. Through her organisation, she has played a key role in restoring livelihoods. Transforming drought-prone villages through innovative water-harvesting initiatives, she gave hope to many villages. Talking about the first edition of Ramoji Excellence Awards, Vice-President Radhakrishnan said, "Sri Ramoji Rao garu was a visionary who transformed ideas into institutions and dreams into enduring realities. He was not only a pioneer in media and communication but a true nation-builder. His commitment to truth, ethics, and excellence continues to inspire generations across the entire nation."Born in Uttar Pradesh, Amla started her philanthropic work at an early age. She engaged with community issues and was deeply affected by the droughts in Rajasthan from 1998 to 2000 and in 2003. She shifted her focus to water conservation and set up the Aakar Charitable Trust (ACT) to help villages in constructing check dams and preserving access to water. Through Aakar, Ruia supported drought-prone rural areas by increasing the groundwater level through traditional water harvesting techniques in rural India. Her work transformed the lives of over 18 lakh villagers in Rajasthan and other areas affected by water scarcity and poverty.
