Chaiyya
Chaiyya singer Sukhwinder Singh has now recalled this first song for Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan. During a recent interview, he had spoken about the gratefulness because he was the first hero in his voice. He had further explained the moment when he was given a chance to perform with Khan on stage which went for one hour straight. For the unversed, Chaiyya Chaiyya is from the Bollywood hit film Dil Se..., released in 1998. The lyrics were based on song Tere Ishq Nachaya by Bulleh Shah with music composed by A.R. Rahman, written by Gulzar, and co-sung by Sapna Awasthi.
Sukhwinder Singh talks about first song with SRK
During a recent interview with
Pinkvilla, Sukhwinder Singh explained, "
Main unse bepanaah mohabbat karta hun, isliye kyunki wo mera pehla hero hai jahan meri aawaz parde pe chadi ek hero ke upar. Mera pehla gaana hai Chhaiyaa Chhaiyaa Shah Rukh ke saath. Uss insaan ko parde pe jab dekha to … meri awaz ka wo pehla hero. Phir wo laad pyaar zabardast tareeke se hai hamara.(I love him immensely because he was the first hero on whose face my voice was heard on screen. My very first song,
Chhaiyaa Chhaiyaa, was with Shah Rukh Khan. When I saw that person on screen… he became the first hero of my voice. Since then, the affection and warmth between us have been incredibly special)."
Sukhwinder Singh on performing with the legend
He also spoke about their performance on stage as he said, "
Ek baar ek show ke liye unko (Shah Rukh Khan) 45 minutes ke liye he was to perform on the stage. Kuch hamare aise hero hai jo bahut hi behatareen kalakaar hai, but they don’t like to perform on the stage. To 45 minutes ke liye tay hua hoga…wo organiser bhaag ke aaya mere pass, kehta hai hum to doob jayenge. Maine kaha kya hua? Kehta hai wo 30 minutes se aapki hi tareef kare jaa rahe. Maine jacket pehni then we perform together for one hour.(Once, for a show, he (Shah Rukh Khan) was supposed to perform on stage for just 45 minutes. We have some heroes who are brilliant artistes but don’t like performing on stage. So it was decided for 45 minutes. The organiser came running to me, saying, ‘We’re going to sink.’ I asked what happened. He said, ‘For the last 30 minutes, he’s only been praising you.’ I then put on my jacket, and we ended up performing together for one hour)."For the unaware, the music video was directed by Mani Ratnam and featured Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora performing the song on top of a moving train.
