The Last Tenant out online
Irrfan Khan and
Vidya Balan's The Last Tenant was released as a tribute to the late actor on his death anniversary (April 29) on the YouTube channel of The Salt Inc. It is written and directed by Sarthak Dasgupta and produced by Neena and Sarthak Dasgupta.
The Last Tenant marked Dasgupta’s debut as a filmmaker, who directed films like Netflix's
Music Teacher,
The Amol Palekar, and
200 Halla Ho, among others. Dasgupta said that he had been a novice with everything to learn, having neither assisted anyone nor attended film school. He remembered that back then, there was no medium like Amazon to order books or YouTube tutorials to watch, and he embarked on this journey relying solely on his intuition, unsure whether it could become a career. He also said that the film's release now, as a tribute to Irrfan, has made it even more emotional, as it feels like revisiting a forgotten dream.
What is The Last Tenant about?
The Last Tenant is characterized as a subtle, haunting, and deeply personal tale of a troubled musician who seeks refuge in an abandoned house before departing the country. It explores themes of memory, music, and yearning, creating a contemplative and atmospheric experience rather than following a conventional commercial narrative. Apart from Irrfan and Vidya, The Last Tenant also features Annu Khandelwal, Saurabh Agarwal, Sabya Saachi, Satish Kalra, and Anand Mishra.
