The
legal dispute between Elon Musk and OpenAI concluded its second week of hearing with dramatic testimonies and new details about the company’s early days becoming public in court. Musk claims that OpenAI betrayed its original non-profit mission and is moving toward a profit-driven organisation. Here is everything that happened during the second week of the high-stakes courtroom drama.
All About The Lawsuit
The Tesla CEO co-founded OpenAI and claims that the organisation’s leadership has betrayed its original mission. As per Musk, OpenAI was originally created as a nonprofit company focused on building artificial intelligence to benefit humanity. He alleges that Greg Brockman and Sam Altman convinced him to invest millions of dollars into the project before later shifting the firm toward a for-profit model. OpenAI has rejected Musk’s accusations and claimed that Musk became unhappy after the company rejected his proposal to merge OpenAI with Tesla and make him in charge as CEO.
Brockman’s Testimony Draws Attention
As per Bloomberg, Brockman, co-founder and president at OpenAI, made several surprising statements related to Musk and the company's internal dynamics. As per Brockman, Musk wanted to be the CEO of OpenAI. He also highlighted that he owns a stake in the firm reportedly worth nearly $30 billion. The trial also heard claims that the xAI chief warned Brockman before the hearing that he would make Brockman and Altman ‘the most hated men in America’ if the lawsuit continued. OpenAI filed this in its court filings previously this week.
Greg Brockman’s Private Journals Read In Court
One of the most shocking moments in the hearing emerged when excerpts from Brockman’s personal journals were read by Musk’s lawyers against the
OpenAI president. These diary entries became a notable part of the legal discovery process, and as per The Wall Street Journal, they contained Brockman’s thoughts on leadership struggles before 2018 and his relationship with Musk.A journal entry from 2017 reportedly read, “Ok so what do I really want?... We might succeed, truly. This is the only chance we have to get out from Elon.” OpenAI argued that these excerpts were used without proper context.
Musk’s Partner Rejects Information-Sharing Claims
Former OpenAI board member and partner of Musk,
Shivon Zilis, also testified during the hearing. Zilis revealed that Musk discussed the possibility of converting OpenAI into a profit-led company years ago, although she mentioned that it was one of the many ideas being explored at that time. Moreover, she reportedly denied the claims that she acted as a source of internal OpenAI information for Musk. She had stepped down from OpenAI’s board in 2023.
Former OpenAI CTO Testifies
As per Bloomberg, the testimony from former OpenAI chief technology officer
Mira Murati was played in the court in a video message. She stated that Altman created confusion and allegedly misled some executives on the testing of some ChatGPT models. However, she said that she still wanted Altman to remain CEO of OpenAI after the board removed him for a brief period in November 2023. What lies ahead is Musk reportedly demanding $180 billion as damages linked to OpenAI’s for-profit operations. The case has raised wider questions about the AI industry.
OpenAI remains at the centre of the debate whether companies making powerful AI models should prioritise public benefit or commercial profits. The outcome of this case will definitely impact the AI policies and products of the company in some way or another.
