High Court Clears Lawrence Of Punjab Release After Makers Agree To Change Title
The Punjab and Haryana High Court cleared the way for the Zee5 documentary to be released, but asked the makers to change the title and remove to 'Lawrence' and 'Punjab' from its title. The directions were given by Justice Jagmohan Bansal, who had personally viewed the documentary. He was of the opinion that the series did not appear to glorify any individual and that it could be released, subject to changes in its title and promotional content.
The court also made it clear that the names 'Lawrence Bishnoi' and 'Punjab' should not be used anywhere in connection with the release, including trailers and posters. The case came before the court on a petition filed by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, which had challenged the advisory issued by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting asking Zee5 not to release the documentary. The company argued the advisory was issued without citing any specific legal provision.
All About Lawrence Of Punjab Row
The series was originally scheduled to premiere on April 27, 2026, but its release was blocked after the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an advisory on April 24, asking Zee5 not to stream the show. The move came following concerns raised by Punjab Police.A petition was also filed by Ludhiana MP Raja Warring, who argued that
Lawrence Of Punjab glorifies the jailed gangster and could negatively influence young viewers. Authorities feared the content could affect law and order in Punjab. The Punjab Advocate-General opposed the release in its existing form, saying the series amounted to glorification of the alleged gangster. He also pointed out that the Punjab government had already facilitated the removal of more than 2,600 social media videos and posts linked to gangster glorification.Zee5, however, maintained that Lawrence Of Punjab does not glorify Bishnoi but instead examines the student politics ecosystem that contributed to the rise of gangsters like him, arguing that objections were based only on the trailer.Zee5 then approached the Delhi High Court seeking relief to protect its right to stream the content.
