Musk called the ending "pathetic" after a social media user criticised the show for creating a character of Homelander as "a direct analogy for former U.S. President Donald Trump."The Boys has starred actors, also including Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, Laz Alonso,
Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Elisabeth Shue, Colby Minifie, Aya Cash, Claudia Doumit, Jensen Ackles, Cameron Crovetti, Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Daveed Diggs, across its five seasons, through seven years.
Eric Kripke reacts to Elon Musk's review
On May 21, Musk reacted to an X user, who slammed the show's last episode. "The show writers turned Homelander into a Trump analogue, and this is how they choose to end The Boys. This entire show was just a deranged sexual humiliation fantasy projected onto Trump. They can't even produce a decent superhero parody without injecting their twisted fetishes into every script," the user wrote. Elon Musk, in his response write back, "Pathetic."Kripke seemed amused by the response rather than offended. The creator joked he would "never get a better review." He posted, "OMG this is his review of what @TheBoysTV did to Homelander, I’ll never get a better review ever." The exchange of words quickly went viral among fans of the superhero satire series.
Homelander's ending debate
The debate is over what to do with
Homelander, who has been depicted throughout the series as a violent, power-hungry superhero. In the finale the character is stripped of his powers and eventually killed after begging desperately for his life. The scene provoked a strong response online, especially from viewers who felt the character had become a more and more obvious political parody.Kripke has openly admitted in previous interviews that Homelander was partially inspired by Trump. He has previously spoken about the character, explaining Homelander was about unchecked ambition, insecurity and the dangers of power without accountability. “As real-world events unfolded over the years, the political parallels grew stronger,” the showrunner said.
Political satire of The Boys
While some viewers felt the political messaging became more obvious in later seasons, many fans pointed out that The Boys had always used superheroes as a vehicle for satire about celebrity culture, politics, media manipulation and corporate influence. The finale also included a billionaire tech personality many viewers took to be a parody of Musk himself. This probably added another layer to the billionaire’s critique of the episode.
