Award-winning Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta has reportedly died after suffering serious injuries in a fall from the terrace of his residence in Kolkata’s Hindustan Park on Wednesday, May 27. The acclaimed director, known for films such as Bhooter Bhabishyat, Borunbabur Bondhu, Aparajito and Joto Kando Kolkatatei, was reportedly taken to a hospital near Dhakuria in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Reports also suggest that the filmmaker had been battling respiratory issues for a long time.
Anik Dutta dies after falling from roof
According to reports, Anik Dutta had been living alone at his Kolkata residence for the past few months, while his daughter currently resides in Mumbai. He was also the grandson of Narendra Chandra Dutta, founder of United Bank of India. As per reports, he was admitted to the hospital after being seriously injured due to the fall, that ultimately turned fatal.Anik Dutta became a celebrated name in Bengali cinema with the release of
Bhooter Bhabishyat in 2012. This was his debut directorial, featuring actors including Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Parambrata Chatterjee, Swastika Mukherjee and Saswata Chatterjee. The film gained fame all over the country for its political satire, social commentary and horror-comedy elements. Over the years, the filmmaker carved a niche for himself with his sharp storytelling style and unconventional narratives.
He later continued exploring similar themes in films like
Ashchorjyo Prodeep. Anik was not only a director, he also wrote most of his films. His signature style, that showed the most tragic stories with sarcastic and witty dialogues became his trademark as a filmmaker. He was a recipient of several awards, including Filmfare Awards East for Best Dialogue and Filmfare Awards East for Best Director for his film Borunbabur Bondhu starring the legendary Soumitra Chatterjee.
Anik Dutta's film career
The director once again received immense praise with
Aparajito, starring Jeetu Kamal. Inspired by the making of Pather Panchali, the film struck an emotional chord with audiences and emerged as both a critical and commercial success. At the time of his death, Anik Dutta was reportedly working on
Aparajito 2.His last directorial venture,
Joto Kando Kolkatatei, starring Abir Chatterjee, released in September last year. During the release of
Joto Kando Kolkatatei, the filmmaker had reportedly expressed concern that it could become his final directorial venture. Anik Dutta is survived by his separated partner Sandhi and a daughter. The filmmaker’s passing marks a significant loss for Bengali cinema.
