One
of the most discussed topics among Kollywood film buffs this week is Suriya's Karuppu. Fans have been celebrating the Rs 300 crore-earning film, which has marked a major comeback for the actor. However, a recent post by the film’s director, RJ Balaji, seemed to have received a mixed response from ardent admirers of the actor. The filmmaker shared a picture with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, with a caption indicating that the film began with him, leaving several film buffs confused and upset. What followed were several negatively worded messages targeting the makers. As the discussion around the issue continues, Suriya has indirectly shared a message to his "anbanna" fans.
Did Suriya Break Silence on RJ Balaji’s ‘Where It All Started’ Post About TN CM Vijay and Karuppu?
Suriya recently shared a short but cryptic message on Instagram Stories that caught the attention of fans and social media users. The post read, “Lead with love. Stay kind. Stay generous.” Although the actor did not mention anyone or refer to any specific incident, the timing of the message has been doing the rounds online.
His post comes amid Karuppu's massive box office innings. It is among the top 10 highest-grossing Tamil films globally, marking a mark for Suriya’s latest. Karuppu has surpassed, Thalapathy Vijay’s Master (Rs 250–260 crore worldwide, including about Rs 137 crore from Tamil Nadu), Mersal (Rs 252–260 crore worldwide), and Sarkar (Rs 248–252 crore worldwide).
What Is Karuppu Controversy About?
The controversy began after director RJ Balaji shared a picture with the caption "'With the man who started it all for Karuppu" and, “Thank you for everything dearest Vijay sir,”. For the unversed, RJ Balaji revealed that he had initially narrated Karuppu to Vijay before the actor went on to commit to Jana Nayagan, which is expected to be his final film before entering politics full-time.
Speaking in an interview, RJ Balaji recalled Vijay’s response and expressed respect for the actor-politician’s decision to step away from the project while sharing inputs, which included changes to the script.
Editor's Comment Angers Suriya Fans
The controversy intensified when Karuppu editor R Kalaivanan, during an interview, was asked how the film might have turned out with Vijay in the lead. He responded that the film could have been “even more explosive, and that Suriya also did a good job'. Following criticism, Kalaivanan issued an apology on social media, stating that his comments had been misinterpreted and that he should have chosen his words more carefully.
