Akshay
Kumar and Priyadarshan have given another Rs 100 crore hit. Bhooth Bangla, a mythical horror comedy, has drawn the family audience to theatres, and the result is visible at the box office. The trailer did not give out the entire plot and unfolded only on the big screen. Priyadarshan introduced the fictional demon, Vadhusur, in the promotional assets, leaving fans curious. The antagonist of Bhooth Bangla isn’t a ghost or an intangible spirit, but a bat-like creature who has a backstory as well. Vadhusur is not your regular beast, either. *Spoilers ahead*
Bhooth Bangla story
Vadhusur is a mythical being, residing in a quiet and isolated area of Mangalpur.
Bhooth Bangla begins with a warning that passing through the town could prove dangerous. The audience is made to believe that
Mangalpur’s demon, Vadhusur, kidnaps brides, and they never return home. Without paying heed to this warning, a newly married woman and her entire family decide to take the route to Lucknow via Mangalpur. The prediction comes true. The bride gets kidnapped, and she goes untraceable.
Mangalpur's myth
At a railway station, a group of four boys are waiting for their train to Mangalpur, but due to heavy rains, the tracks are flooded. They have to spend time until the train arrives. Keeping them warm is an old man who narrates the haunting tales that occur in the small town.
How does Akshay Kumar enter Mangalpur?
Dushund Maharaj, a visionary, dies of old age. He leaves behind countless wealth and a bungalow that is not safe for humans to survive. After his death, Dushund transfers the property to his granddaughter Meera’s (Mithila Palkar) name. Her father, Dr Vasudev Acharya (Jisshu Sengupta) is unaware of this. Meera and her elder brother Arjun (
Akshay Kumar) decide to get her married at the ancestral property. Arjun flies down to India for a recce. Despite warnings, he refuses to cancel the wedding and chooses his grandfather’s mansion. Unexplained incidents occur in the house. Arjun hires a wedding planner (Paresh Rawal), who brings his nephew Balli (Rajpal Yadav) for help. He starts experiencing something unusual. One night, a bat-like creature, called Vadhusur, enters his body through the mouth.
Who is Vadhusur?
Vadhusur was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. Due to his wrongdoings and unfairness, he is killed by Vrikshni. After killing him, he is buried under a temple, and
Vrikshni takes the form of a tree to keep an eye on him. While the residents of Mangalpur are unaware of Vadhusur’s temple, Balli, who is now possessed by the demon, leads Arjun to the location.
Akshay Kumar in double role
When Arjun has to protect his family from Vadhusur, the truth is revealed. It is disclosed that Vasudev isn’t Arjun’s father, and Dushund is not dead. They share a ‘shishya-guru’ relationship. Many years ago, the Vedic scholar had two students –
Madhav, his son, and Vasudev, the better disciple. The latter falls in love with
Yashoda (
Tabu). She is the daughter of Dushund’s friend. Secretly, even Madhav admires Yashoda, a fantastic dancer. After a dance performance, Dushund announces Vasudev and Yashoda’s marriage. Madhav does not take this lightly. He knows that his father has devised equipment to keep Vadhusur at bay. If the
Shiv chants play in reverse, it could attract and strengthen the demon’s powers.
Tabu plays Akshay Kumar's mother
Out of rage, Madhav summons Vadhusur. When his father learns about this, he wants Vasudev to leave Yashoda. She is then forced to marry Madhav. Yashoda learns about Madhav’s intentions and sees him transforming into a beast. She cuts ties with him and moves to the U.S with Vasudev. By then, she is pregnant, and the curse of Madhav’s evil intentions carries on. Yashoda dies young, and Vasudev pledges to never let the horrors of the past affect Arjun.
How does Bhooth Bangla end?
After knowing the past, Arjun is confident that he wants Meera to get married at the ancestral home. The plan is to trick Vadhusur by completing the wedding rituals before sunset and crossing the Ganga River. If the time is missed, the demon could gain power to attack the 13th and final bride. Meera’s in-laws refuse a morning wedding. The Acharyas, with the help of their priest, plan to trap Vadhusur and weaken his roots. The exact opposite happens, but eventually, Arjun rescues his sister.
Happy ending and sequel in the making?
Though it is a happy ending for all, the seeds sown by Vadhusur might still be growing deep within. A potential sequel could take the story forward. It is up to
Priyadarshan and Akshay to expand it as a franchise, especially amid the good box office run.
