Thalapathy
Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, his final film before fully stepping into politics, has recently faced controversy after a five-minute clip and the several scenes were leaked online. The makers have since issued a strong legal notice, with KVN Productions confirming illegal access and circulation of content across digital platforms. This incident adds to a long list of South Indian films affected by piracy before or during release. From major theatrical releases to OTT premieres, several high-profile films have suffered similar leaks over the years.
7 South Indian Films Which Leaked On Piracy Sites
Master (2021)
One of the most talked-about piracy incidents involved Vijay’s Master. Before its theatrical release, several crucial clips, including Vijay’s introduction scene, were leaked online and widely circulated. The sudden spread of the footage shocked the film’s team and sparked concern among fans. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj and the production team immediately worked to remove the content from online platforms and asked audiences not to encourage piracy, and spoke about the importance of experiencing the film in theatres.
Darbar (2020)
Rajinikanth’s Darbar also suffered piracy issues when the film was leaked online within hours of its release. The HD print appeared on illegal websites, significantly affecting its theatrical run. Prior to release, the film had already been in the news for leaked images and videos from sets, which raised early concerns about content security.
Ponmagal Vandhal (2020)
Jyotika’s Ponmagal Vandhal, which was released directly on Amazon Prime Video during the COVID-19 lockdown, also became a piracy target. Despite being a digital premiere, the HD version of the film was leaked on torrent platforms just hours before its official OTT release. The incident showed that piracy was no longer limited to theatrical films and had went deeply into digital streaming platforms as well.
Attarintiki Daredi (2013)
The Telugu blockbuster Attarintiki Daredi, starring Pawan Kalyan, faced one of the most severe pre-release piracy incidents in Indian cinema. Around 90 minutes of the film was leaked online and circulated through CDs just days before its scheduled release. The leak, traced to a member of the post-production team, forced changes in the release strategy. Despite the setback, the film went on to become the highest-grossing Telugu film of its time.
Kaala (2018)
Rajinikanth’s Kaala also experienced multiple piracy incidents. Shortly after its release, TamilRockers uploaded an HD version online. In another incident, over 40 minutes of the film was streamed illegally on Facebook Live by an individual in Singapore before being taken down.
Yevadu (2014)
Ram Charan’s Yevadu faced leaks during its production phase, with working stills and song sequences appearing online without permission. These leaks disrupted promotional plans and created unnecessary controversy around the film’s release.
Baahubali
SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali franchise also encountered piracy threats when a major war sequence reportedly leaked online during post-production. The filmmakers responded quickly by filing a complaint, leading to the identification and arrest of the person responsible. The incident showed the vulnerability of even the most tightly secured projects.
