Legendary actor Mammootty is set to return to Tamil cinema after six years with Dhanush’s upcoming film D55, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy. On 4 February, the makers confirmed his participation, on social
media. This mark his first full-fledged on-screen collaboration with Dhanush, generating significant buzz among fans of both Tamil and Malayalam industries. Backed by Wunderbar Films 55 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Tamil films in recent times.
D55: Dhanush and Mammootty’s First Full Collaboration
The post indicated that Mammootty’s decision to join Dhanush’s upcoming film D55 has created excitement, with the entire team feeling honoured as the Big M brings his legendary presence to the project. The two actors have appeared together before, though briefly, in Dhanush’s cameo in Mammootty’s Malayalam film Proprietors: Kammath & Kammath. This new film , however, is expected to be far more significant, as it is their first film together.
The film is written and directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, known for his blockbuster Amaran, starring Sivakarthikeyan. While the film was launched in 2024 details have been shared out gradually. Reports indicate that Mammootty may join the shoot after completing his recently announced Malayalam project
Padayathra and before starting work on
Nithish Sahadev’s gangster action film.
D55 Cast And OTT Release
Alongside Dhanush and Mammootty, Sai Pallavi has officially joined the cast, reuniting with Dhanush for the second time after Maari 2 (2018). She will share the screen with Sreeleela. Sai Pallavi is also collaborating with director Rajkumar Periasamy for the second time after Amaran. Young music sensation Sai Abhyankkar has been confirmed as the composer, while the rest of the technical crew is yet to be announced.
D55 is being produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films in association with RTake Studios, after a change from its initially announced production banner, Gopuram Films. Netflix has already acquired the film’s OTT rights.

Mammootty’s last major Tamil outing was Peranbu (2019), a critically acclaimed drama, followed by a bilingual appearance in Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam (2023). D55, is his first mainstream Tamil cinema return in years.
