The San Francisco-based AI giant OpenAI may be moving faster than expected in its push toward hardware. After earlier rumours hinted at AI-first earbuds and even a smartphone concept, latest leaks from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo now paint a clearer picture of what could be the ChatGPT-maker’s most ambitious move yet, a dedicated AI agent smartphone. And if timelines hold, this device might not be too far away and here's everything you need to know about this.A Smartphone Built Around AI, Not AppsAccording to Ming-Chi Kuo, the US-based AI giant could begin mass production of its first smartphone as early as the first half of 2027. Unlike traditional devices, this one may be designed from the ground up around AI agents. Instead of hopping between apps,
users could just tell the phone what they want and the system handles the rest. That shift from “app-based” to “intent-based” interaction could completely change how we use smartphones. On the hardware side, Kuo suggests that MediaTek is currently leading the race to supply a customised processor. The chip is expected to be based on the Dimensity 9600 platform and built using TSMC’s advanced N2P process sometime in late 2026.The handset may also sport a dual NPU architecture, essentially giving it two dedicated AI engines for handling layered tasks. Add to that LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage and the mission seems pretty clear-keep everything fast, even when AI is constantly running in the background. There’s also talk of an upgraded ISP, which could help the device better “see” and interpret the world through improved HDR imaging. One of the key ideas behind this device is balance. The AI giant is reportedly working on a hybrid model where lighter tasks are handled directly on the phone, while heavier workloads shift to the cloud. This setup could allow the phone to stay responsive while still delivering powerful AI capabilities. It may also continuously learn from user behaviour, adapting in real time without needing constant input.Features like pKVM and inline hashing are expected to be part of the system, aimed at protecting user data in a world where devices are always “listening” and learning. If everything goes according to plan, Kuo estimates shipments could hit around 30 million units across 2027 and 2028 combined.
