June
2 marks the birthday of legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja. Every year, fans and film personalities across industries come together on this day to honour the maestro, making it a celebrated occasion within the Indian film fraternity. Social media is once again filled with wishes and tributes for the music legend, whose influence spans generations. Many have also shared his iconic compositions online to appreciate his timeless work. Several political leaders and actors have extended their greetings as well. While the date is observed as his birthday, the story behind this unusual date carries a meaning connected to a revered leader.
Do You Know Why Ilaiyaraaja’s Birthday Is Celebrated on June 2?
Ilaiyaraaja was born on June 3 1943, but he consciously chose to observe his birthday a day earlier. The reason behind this unique decision lies in Ilaiyaraaja’s respect for former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
For the unversed, M. Karunanidhi’s birthday falls on June 3, and out of admiration for him, Ilaiyaraaja decided to shift his own birthday observance. In an interview, he said that he had not contributed as much to Tamil society as the leader had and felt it would be inappropriate for both to share the same day of public celebration. As a result, he chose to celebrate his birthday on June 2, ensuring that June 3 remains dedicated to Karunanidhi’s legacy.
Ilaiyaraaja Gets Birthday Wishes From Leaders and Film Personalities
Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin also acknowledged this gesture in a social media post, noting that Ilaiyaraaja moved his birthday out of respect for Karunanidhi. He also recalled how Karunanidhi honoured the composer with the title “Isaignani.” The picture he shared along with the post featured film legends Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.
Actor Kamal Haasan also extended his wishes to the maestro, praising his enduring musical influence and wishing him continued long life and creative brilliance.
Ilaiyaraaja's Upcoming Films
On the professional front, filmmaker Mari Selvaraj recently announced Manjanathi, marking his first collaboration with the legendary composer. Meanwhile, director Karthik Subbaraj is also set to work with Ilaiyaraaja on his 10th project, describing the collaboration as a “dream come true.” The maestro has already had two releases this year, including Mylanji and Antony.
In March last year, legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja made history by debuting his first-ever Western classical symphony, titled Valiant (Symphony No. 1), at London’s Eventim Apollo Theatre. He was accompanied by the renowned Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, becoming the first Asian film composer to debut a Western classical symphony in London.
