What is the story about?
The
trailer of Netflix film Kartavya is finally out. "Dharam karte hai, karam choothta hai, karam karte hai dharam choothta hai, Kartavya tak toh baat hi nahi pohonchti," says Saif Ali Khan right at the beginning of the trailer. We soon see how it reflects in every single frame of the 2 Minutes 25 Seconds clip. After teasing audiences with its brooding first look, Kartavya has finally unveiled its official trailer, and it promises a tense crime drama powered by Saif Ali Khan in one of his most conflicted roles yet. Produced by Red Chillies Entertainment, the film seems to be about police procedural tension along with emotional family drama.
Kartavya trailer OUT
Directed by Pulkit, Kartavya seems to be more invested in moral ambiguity of the protagonist. The trailer shows a world where justice is constantly compromised, loyalties are tested and even faith becomes a source of strength amid chaos.Saif Ali Khan’s Pawan, a weary police officer and devoted “Mahadev ka bhakt,” is already under enormous pressure. A journalist under his protection is assassinated, instantly throwing both the police department and media into turmoil. As senior officers tighten the screws around him, Pawan is forced into a dangerous hunt for the killer while simultaneously trying to protect his own family from new threats. The trailer wastes little time establishing its grim tone. Dimly lit interrogation rooms, political backchannels and shocking confrontations are the USP of the film. Saif’s restrained performance, who loses his cool one time and shakes the world, truly stands out. Instead of playing a loud, larger-than-life cop, he portrays a man who looks exhausted by the weight of his responsibilities. What makes Kartavya particularly intriguing is how it places personal conflict alongside systemic corruption. Pawan is not only battling criminals and institutional pressure but also dealing with tensions inside his own home. His brother’s involvement in a dispute drags the family into danger, forcing him to choose between protecting loved ones and upholding the law. The trailer repeatedly drives home one central idea: duty is never clean.Watch the trailer here:

Alongside Saif, the supporting cast adds considerable gravitas. Rasika Dugal appears in a significant role, playing Saif's wife, while Sanjay Mishra, Zakir Hussain, Manish Chaudhari and Saurabh Dwivedi further populate the morally murky world of the film. Every character in the trailer seems to carry secrets, making it difficult to identify clear heroes or villains. More about Kartavya Speaking about the project, Saif Ali Khan described Pawan as “a man constantly negotiating with himself.” He added, "What drew me to Kartavya is that it doesn’t offer easy answers; it puts you in uncomfortable spaces and forces you to ask what you would do when every choice comes at a personal cost."That internal struggle is visible throughout the trailer. Unlike conventional cop dramas that glorify righteousness, Kartavya appears more interested in asking uncomfortable questions. How far should someone go to protect family? What happens when the system itself becomes compromised? Can justice survive inside institutions built on influence and fear? Talking about the film, director Pulkit shared, “Kartavya is a story that lives in the grey, where every choice carries a cost and certainty is always out of reach. The collaboration also marks Saif Ali Khan’s first project with Red Chillies Entertainment, the production banner founded by Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan. The high production scale is very visible in the trailer.Kartavya premieres on Netflix on May 15.
