James Cameron's latest is the concert film Billie Eilish — Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), where he brings another layer to the Grammy winner's latest world tour. However, fans are looking forward to the next instalment of Avatar. Last year, the writer-director released Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film, which introduced a new ruthless Na'vi clan called Mangkwan. So when will the next two films in the Avatar franchise be out? James Cameron shared an update that is less than promising for fans. Here's what he had to say.
When will Avatar 4 and 5 be released?
Speaking on
The Empire Film Podcast, the Oscar-winning filmmaker shared that he had to still figure out a way to get the fourth and fifth films rolling.
James Cameron revealed that for the near future he would be busy writing as well as working on a few projects. But one of the things he's focusing on is looking at new technologies to make the
Avatar films more efficient, as they are very expensive and take several years to make.
He stated, "I want to do them in half the time for two thirds of the cost, that’s my metric. And so, it’s going to take us a year or so to figure out how to do that." The Disney franchise has now earned around $987 million. If at any point the director decides to stop the
Avatar film, he stated that he would hold a press conference to inform everyone about it. Cameron was not sure if the saga would continue beyond the third film but he hoped that it would. Some scenes have already been filmed for the fourth film but Cameron wants to make a profit in the franchise in order to continue.
