Yami Gautam on following method acting for Haq
In a chat with us, Yami Gautam shared insights into her intense preparation for her latest role, revealing that she spent a month diving into method acting to truly embody the character. However, she was quick to downplay any over-the-top descriptions of her approach, explaining, "I don’t know how to break down my process into method acting or anything else. Sometimes, these things get exaggerated in PR language, but I can tell you there’s a lot of hard work that went into creating and shaping this character. Sometimes, the process is so internal that I get caught up in it, and honestly, I don’t know how to explain it or make it sound like I worked so much."Yami Guatam: Understanding character at an emotional level is important
The Vicky Donor actress went on to emphasise that before focusing on the physical aspects of a character, understanding it emotionally is crucial. "Before you get into the physicality, it’s about understanding the character emotionally and connecting with that wavelength. I believe this is extremely important, and everything else follows from that. It’s never the other way around. And of course, the script is the best source of information. A good script is everything. So I keep reading it over and over again."Yami further elaborated on the challenges of portraying a character inspired by a real person, someone whose story is known in the public domain, yet whom she never met. "The film is inspired by someone, and while we know certain aspects of their life, I never met the person. So, I had to figure out how to envision and interpret that. The approach was to go backwards, to think in reverse. We all knew how the story ended, but I focused on understanding what kind of person would have the courage to take that challenge in the first place, to stand up against the system in the 70s and 80s for what they felt was right - and not remain oppressed."ALSO READ: Yami Gautam Dhar Reacts To 8-Hour Work Shift Debate, Stresses On 'Understanding Between Actors, Makers' - ExclusiveWorking on Haq was all about working with uninhibited and open mind
She reflected on the bigger picture, saying, "Sometimes, out of oppression, you create history. And that’s where I connect with my character. A lot of work went into this, including countless voice notes exchanged between me, Suparn Verma (the director), and Rishu. It was all about working with an uninhibited and open mind. And when it came to diction and delivering the monologue, it wasn’t just about getting the lines right, it was about how you say them, and what you convey in that moment. Because that monologue encapsulates the essence of the film."About Haq
The story centers around a woman who refuses to accept injustice in silence after being abandoned and denied alimony. Yami Gautam plays the role of Shazia Bano, who takes a bold stand by challenging the unfair practices of Triple Talaq in court. Her courageous fight not only leads to a groundbreaking legal victory but also marks a historic moment in Indian jurisprudence.Do you find this article useful?
