AI Could Fuel Bioweapons And Wipe Out Jobs, Warns Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei

intelligence has become a key part of our lives. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has highlighted how AI could soon give birth to concerning issues. From creating serious cyberattack risks to emerging as a source of biological weapons, Amodei has issued some of the strongest warnings on Wednesday in his Policy on the AI Exponential essay.

AI Risks Are Growing Faster Than Regulation

Amodei has asserted that the technology is developing so rapidly that governments and regulators might struggle to keep the pace. He has argued that AI has evolved dramatically in a couple of years and may soon reach what he described as “a country of geniuses in a data centre", referring to highly capable AI systems that he warns could outperform humans across many fields. Among his most serious warnings is the possibility that advanced AI systems may contribute to biological threats. The Anthropic CEO pointed out that recent discoveries show AI models can create cybersecurity risks capable of affecting financial systems, critical infrastructure and national security. “I believe that biological risks may soon follow and that serious AI autonomy risks may not be far behind,” he stressed.He added, “The cyber risks that Mythos-class models present will not be the last that we must face.”

Notably, Amodei continues to maintain his stance on AI taking over jobs. He mentioned that the economic impact AI may have on workers could be large-scale. As per him, AI could become a substitute for various cognitive tasks currently performed by humans, potentially leading to lasting disruptions in the job market. He wrote, “Enduring job displacement is undesirable and dangerous. There’s a decent possibility that, despite all our efforts, AI still causes significant enduring job loss,” adding that governments should start tracking the impact of AI on employment and prepare support systems for affected workers.

Power Concentration And Surveillance

Apart from the economic concerns, Amodei warns that advanced AI could become a powerful tool for authoritarian governments and other actors seeking greater control. He explained, “Powerful AI in the wrong hands could be the ultimate tool of autocracy. A surveillance-focused AI could analyse widely available information at massive scale and use it to infer the innermost details of every citizen’s life.”

He stressed, “AI could suddenly confer enormous power while routing around existing mechanisms of democratic oversight.”Anthropic has proposed stronger regulations for advanced AI systems to address these concerns, including mandatory safety testing, security requirements and government oversight similar to the way aircraft are regulated before entering the service. He has mentioned that public concern about AI should not be dismissed as fear or misunderstanding. Instead, he argued that worries about the technology are rooted in genuine risks that society must confront.
