Suman recalled that the incident dates back to the time when Shah Rukh Khan was working on
Chalte Chalte. The superstar personally reached out to him, requesting his voice for a teaser commentary. “He called me up directly and said, ‘Hi, this is Shah Rukh.’ I said, ‘Yeah, Shah Rukh,’” Suman shared with Bollywood Hungama, adding that the conversation was casual and friendly.
Without hesitation, Suman agreed to lend his voice and completed the recording. However, what followed took him by surprise. Shah Rukh sent him a substantial cheque as a token of appreciation. Suman recalled, "Later, he sent me a big cheque, but I told him this was between two friends and not about money." However, despite his refusal, Shah Rukh did not let it go. “Shah Rukh being Shah Rukh,” Suman said, the actor later sent him a 'very expensive' watch instead. The gift, he revealed, remains with him to this day as a cherished memento. The anecdote perfectly proves why Shah Rukh Khan is loved beyond measure in Bollywood.

In another interview with India Today, Suman also talked about how he missed a major opportunity in his career. He revealed that he was once offered a role in Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The role in question was Chunni Babu, a significant character in the film. However, due to his packed schedule with his popular television show Movers and Shakers, Suman had to turn it down. As we all know, the titular character was played by Shah Rukh Khan.
“At that time, I was neck-deep in Movers and Shakers, doing it five times a week. Much as I wanted to do it, I could not,” he admitted, adding that he does feel a sense of regret about missing out on the film. That said, Suman maintains a balanced perspective on the situation. “Some you win, some you lose. You should not be too regretful about it. It was probably not meant to be,” he reflected.Interestingly, he later got an opportunity to collaborate with Bhansali in the series Heeramandi, which he believes made up for the missed chance.
