On Sunday, the Ministry of Home Affairs released the list of winners of the Padma Awards, which are some of the highest civilian honors in the country. President Droupadi Murmu approved a total of 131
awards, including five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri. Veteran actor Prosenjit Chatterjee is among one of those who have been chosen to be conferred with the Padma Shri. In his recent interview, the actor who has a 4 decade long illustrious career, dedicated the award to his late mother and shared that she sacrificed a lot in her life.

In an interview with PTI, the 63-year-old actor recalled that he was watching his recently released Bengali film at Navina cinema when he received the news. He shared the moment with the audience, who responded with loud cheers.“I would first like to dedicate this honour to my mother, who sacrificed so much to raise us and guided me on a journey that has spanned over four decades. I also share this recognition with my family, especially my son Mishuk. Ultimately, everything I have achieved is because of my countless viewers,” Chatterjee said.The actor added that upon receiving the news, he immediately spoke to his father, legendary actor Biswajit Chatterjee, over the phone. “He told me, ‘So you have got it. I am so proud of you,’” Prosenjit recalled.

Chatterjee also reflected on the absence of his close friend and celebrated filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh, who passed away several years ago. He shared that he misses Rituparno immensely on the special day. He played a crucial role in shaping him as an actor, especially in the world of critically acclaimed, realistic arthouse cinema, and acknowledged the director’s influence on a defining phase of his career.When asked whether he felt the honour had come late, Prosenjit dismissed the idea of timing. “I don’t see it that way. Look at when Soumitra Chatterjee received his honours. What matters is that the government chose to confer this award on me. For that, I am deeply grateful to the Union Ministry,” he said.
Prosenjit Chatterjee's career
The actor started his career in movies as a child actor in the 1960s with Chhotto Jigyasha. He went on to star in lead role and in 1980s he made his first ever film, which was titled Aandhiyan. The actor got a lot of praise for his work in movies like
Chokher Bali, Dosar, Shob Charitro Kalponik, Moner Maanush, Jaatishwar, Autograph and the dramas that won the National Film Award, which're Mayurakshi and Jyeshthoputro. Prosenjit also got recognition in Hindi circuits with web series like
Jubilee and
Khakee: The Bengal Chapter.Prosenjit has won many awards during his long and successful career. These include the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali for
Shankhachil in 2016 and the National Film Award for Special Jury Award / Special Mention for
Dosar in 2007.
