Director
Abhinay Deo's latest project Brown sees him reunite with his brother, actor Ajinkya Deo, on the crime thriller. The Zee5 series features Karisma Kapoor as Rita Brown, a police officer investigating the death of a young woman in Kolkata. Ajinkya plays Dheera Jaiswal, the father of the murdered girl. Their parents, the late Ramesh and Seema Deo, were also respected actors in the film industry. In conversation with us, Abhinay spoke about working with Ajinkya again after the series 24 and why it was helpful for him.
Abhinay Deo on working with brother Ajinkya
Speaking about his elder brother Ajinkya with
Zoom, Abhinay shared, "Luckily, we are not in the same field in the sense of... I'm not an actor and he's not a director. We both have our roles marked out very easily. And the best part about it is I think it helps because I know him from childhood."
He continued, "So I know what he can bring about in a scene or in a sequence. I don't need to spend time to figure out the shades that my brother can bring out. I already know that. That is helpful. And he's a very fine actor. So from that perspective, it was a dream to work with him."
Abhinay Deo on story of Zee5's Brown
The
Savi filmmaker revealed that he didn't know about the existence of Abheek Barua's book,
City of Death. He was introduced to the book by Ashima Avasthi. He recalled, "I read it and found the book extremely intriguing and very intense in nature. I felt that there's a lot in that book. The interesting part also was that when they met me, they also gave me a loose screenplay and wanted a director to come on board."
After Abhinay read
City of Death, he fell in love with the novel. He added, "The first most striking feature was Kolkata in it because it's one of the cities that I really find extremely intriguing and interesting. It's a unique city out of our country. Plus, apart from being a crime drama, it was a very intense human drama and that I think is what intrigued me. And then there was no stopping us." The ensemble cast of
Brown includes Surya Sharma, Soni Razdan, Jisshu Sengupta, Helen Khan, KK Raina, Meghna Malik, Shaan and Paresh Pahuja in pivotal roles. The
Hindi series premiered on Zee5 on June 5.
