Scheduled to release on January 9, the political drama is yet to get clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The censor board believed the film could influence the decision of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and had held it back. With Vijay taking the oath as the Chief Minister, the makers are focused on releasing it at the earliest.

Vijay calls Jana Nayagan producer back to Chennai

According to the latest development, an India Today report revealed that Vijay has made a call to the producer, Venkat K Narayana, who was supposed to be attending the Cannes Film Festival 2026. He is said to be heading back to Chennai to resume work on Jana Nayagan’s theatrical release. A source told the portal that the team will be reuniting to ensure the CBFC clears the film, especially after the Tamil Nadu elections. Once Jana Nayagan gets a green signal from the censor board, further processes to secure screens and the right release date shall be initiated.

Venkat K Narayana shares update on Jana Nayagan's release

Along the sidelines of Vijay’s oath ceremony in Chennai on May 10, KVN Productions’ Venkat shared an update on Jana Nayagan’s release. He told the reporters positively that the film might be released in theatres in approximately two weeks.

Why was Jana Nayagan delayed?

Jana Nayagan is Vijay’s last film as an actor. He will focus entirely on his new career as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister under his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. The H Vinoth directorial was rescheduled hours before its January 9 release due to conflicts with the CBFC. When the censor board objected to certain scenes that could affect the elections and hurt the public’s sentiments, the makers approached the court for a verdict on the release. There were reports that Jana Nayagan would release on May 8. However, Vijay was sworn in on May 10.
