The
buzz around Pralay has been steadily growing as it will be Ranveer Singh's next film after the all-time blockbusters Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar 2. Headlined by Ranveer and backed by filmmaker Hansal Mehta, the ambitious post-apocalyptic thriller will reportedly push the boundaries of Indian cinema. What makes the project even more intriguing is Mehta’s claim that the film will feature extensive VFX while being produced at a fraction of the budget typically required for similar Hollywood productions. He also refuted claim s that the film is adaptation of the book Blindness.
Hansal Mehta reveals how Pralay caught Ranveer Singh's attention
Produced under Hansal Mehta’s new banner, True Story Films, Pralay is being directed by his son Jai Mehta, who is making his feature film debut with the project. The film is also co-produced by Ranveer Singh’s production house, Ma Kasam Films, and reportedly carries a hefty budget of around Rs 300 crore.Currently in the pre-production stage, Pralay has undergone extensive development. The screenplay has been crafted over several months by Jai Mehta and co-writer Vishal Kapoor. According to Hansal Mehta, the process went beyond just writing, involving detailed concept-proofing and pre-visualisation to bring the film’s expansive world to life.
Sharing insights into the film’s journey, Hansal told THR India that the idea had been in the works for a long time before catching Ranveer Singh’s attention. Once the actor showed interest, the team invested heavily in developing the narrative and visual universe. The film will present a dystopian, post-apocalyptic setting unlike anything previously attempted in mainstream Hindi cinema.
Pralay is an original script, will use world-class VFX
Pralay is expected to show a world ravaged by chaos, including a zombie-infested city. The scale of worldbuilding, Mehta suggests, is unprecedented for an Indian film. He stated that development includes not just storytelling but also visualising and shaping ideas in a way that can convincingly translate on screen. Addressing speculation, Hansal Mehta clarified that Pralay is an original story and not an adaptation. Rumours had linked the film to José Saramago’s novel Blindness, but Mehta dismissed these claims, clarifying that Jai Mehta and Vishal Kapoor have created an entirely original narrative. One of the most important aspects of the project is its ambitious use of VFX. Hansal was clear in stating that the film will rely heavily on visual effects to build its dystopian world, and the team is collaborating with international talent to achieve this vision. Despite the scale and 'extensive vfx work', the makers are aiming to make the project at significantly lower costs compared to Hollywood standards. According to Mehta, the success of Pralay will hinge on how immersive and believable its world feels. Achieving that balance between scale and budget is a challenge the team is actively working on.With filming expected to begin in mid-2026, Pralay will be Ranveer Singh's debut as a producer.
