Tamil film industry is bidding an emotional farewell to legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja, who passed away on June 10 due to age-related health complications. Revered as Iyakkunar Imayam, Bharathiraja changed the grammar of Tamil cinema with his realistic storytelling and portrayal of rural life. Today, June 11, his final rites are being conducted with full state honours as his mortal remains have reached his native district of Theni. As tributes continue to pour in from political leaders, actors, filmmakers, and fans, the Tamil film fraternity has also suspended all shooting activities for the day to honour the legend.

Bharathiraja To Be Laid To Rest With State Honours Today

Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, one of Tamil cinema's most celebrated directors, passed away in Chennai on June 10 following age-related health issues. He was 84. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced that the director’s last rites would be conducted with full state honours, in recognition of his massive contribution to Indian cinema. The TVK chief also paid his respects by visiting the veteran filmmaker’s residence on ECR, located close to his own home.

As per the arrangements made by the family and authorities, Bharathiraja's cremation is scheduled to take place today at around 3 PM at his farmhouse near Vathalakundu in Theni district. Family members, close friends, colleagues from the film fraternity, and thousands of admirers are expected to attend and pay their final respects.The Tamil film industry has suspended all shooting activities today as a tribute to the late filmmaker. The Tamil Film Producers Council announced that film and television serial shoots across the state would remain halted from 6 AM to 6 PM on June 11. The decision was taken to honour Bharathiraja's contribution to cinema and allow people of the film industry to participate in his final farewell.

The Legacy Of Iyakkunar Imayam

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Bharathiraja transformed Tamil cinema with landmark films such as 16 Vayathinile, Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Alaigal Oivathillai, Pasumpon, and Mudhal Mariyadhai. His films brought authentic rural stories and characters, changing the landscape of Tamil filmmaking.

A towering figure in Indian cinema, Bharathiraja won six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards South, six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and a Nandi Award. He was also honoured with the Padma Shri for his contribution to the arts. Beyond his films, he played a pivotal role in introducing and mentoring several actors who later became top stars, including Radikaa, Revathi, Radha, Ranjitha, Rekha, Karthik, Napoleon, Pandian, Chandrasekar, and Janagaraj.
