NTR’s highly anticipated sequel to Devara: Part 1 may not be moving ahead as quickly as fans expected. Reports suggest the actor has temporarily put Devara 2 on hold while waiting for a stronger final script draft. While there has been no official confirmation from the makers, producer Lagadapati Sridhar believes the decision is due to changing audience expectations and how commercial Telugu cinema is moving forward. Read on to know why Devera 2 might be on the backburner.
Jr NTR not working on Devara 2?
According to Sridhar, today’s moviegoers are becoming increasingly selective about storytelling, even when stars headline films. Speaking about the reported delay with Deccan Chronicle, he said that fictional period dramas are gradually losing relevance among audiences looking for more relatable tales. “Fictional dramas with period settings are slowly becoming outdated,” Sridhar said, adding that the narrative structure of the original Devara somewhat restricted Jr NTR’s massive screen presence despite the actor’s committed performance.
Despite the film’s strong box office performance and massive anticipation during release, Sridhar feels the sequel now requires a fresher creative approach to truly resonate with evolving viewers. “The film did make money, but today’s audiences are far shrewder and are looking for realistic and relatable plots,” he explained. The producer also stressed that Jr NTR should carefully select scripts and collaborators moving forward if he wants to expand his appeal beyond existing fan bases. “NTR has to choose better stories and directors to raise the bar further. He should find subjects that match his charisma and also help expand his fan base across markets,” he added. Sridhar further reflected on the immense cinematic legacy attached to Jr NTR’s family name. He praised the contribution of legendary actor and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. T. Rama Rao, saying his work shaped Telugu cinema for generations.
More about Devara: Part 1
Released in 2024, Devara: Part 1 was directed by Koratala Siva and featured Jr NTR in a dual-shaded role as Devara and his son Vara. Showing a coastal smuggling network in the fictional Red Sea region during the 1980s and 1990s, the film showed Jr NTR in a vey different avatar.
The story revolved around Devara, a powerful chieftain involved in illegal smuggling operations alongside his associate Bhaira, played by Saif Ali Khan. However, after discovering that the smuggling network was secretly transporting illegal weapons, Devara attempts to shut down the operation, triggering a violent fallout with Bhaira. As tensions increase with every passing second, Devara mysteriously disappears after surviving assassination attempts, leaving behind warnings that force the villagers to abandon smuggling and return to fishing. The second half shifts focus toward his timid son Vara, whose contrasting personality sets up the emotional and action-heavy groundwork for the sequel.
