It
would have been a movie tie-in for the ages. On screen, Meryl Streep plays a fictional version of legendary Vogue editor Anna Wintour in The Devil Wears Prada films. The sequel was released in theatres on May 1, days before the annual fashion event of the year, the Met Gala 2026. While The Devil Wears Prada 2 stars Emily Blunt and Simone Ashley are most likely to attend, Streep, as fictional Runway editor Miranda Priestly, is skipping the Met Gala. With billionaires Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, as co-chairs, several celebrities are reportedly sitting out this year in protest.
Meryl Streep won’t attend Met Gala 2026
A report in
The Hollywood Report suggests that Streep is skipping the event due to Jeff Bezos’ involvement. Not only are the tech czar and his second wife co-chairs, but his company, Amazon, is the lead sponsor. This year, the theme of the Met Gala is “Fashion Is Art," and the couple has been accused of buying their invites. Their participation has caused backlash on social media and celebrities have been called to boycott the event.
In New York, where the event is held annually, 'Boycott the Bezos Met Ball' signs have been showing up for a month and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani (son of Mira Nair) has already announced that he too won't be attending.
The Drama star Zendaya, who has attended the past seven years consecutively, is also skipping the fashion gala.
Lady Gaga, who also has a cameo in
The Devil Wears Prada 2, is rumoured but not confirmed for the gala. Additionally, Streep's representative sent a statement to the
Metro that confirmed her invite to this year's event. The statement revealed that the Oscar winner, who has always been politically outspoken, has been invited several times in the past but she has never accepted. It also added, "While she appreciates Vogue, Anna, and her incredible imagination and stamina, it has never quite been her scene."
