What's the controversy around Jana Nayagan's release?
Jana Nayagan, billed as Vijay’s last film before he steps into politics full-time, was initially scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on January 9, ahead of Pongal. However, just days before its release, the Central Board of Film Certification informed the producers, KVN Productions, that the film had been sent to a revising committee after a complaint was received. The makers challenged the decision in the Madras High Court, which at first ruled in their favour. The court directed the censor board to issue a U/A certificate once the changes suggested by the examining committee were implemented. The CBFC later appealed against this order, following which a division bench of the Madras High Court stayed the single judge’s directive that had asked the board to grant the certificate. The bench listed the matter for further hearing on January 21.
Subsequently, KVN Productions approached the Supreme Court. The case was taken up on January 15, but the apex court declined to grant an urgent hearing and asked the producers to seek relief from the Madras High Court. The High Court later set aside the single judge’s order that had directed the CBFC to issue a censor certificate to the film.
