Poove Unakkaga, after which his fan following grew. In 1996, Sangeetha Sornalingam travelled from the UK to Chennai to meet her favourite actor during a film shoot at Film City. She asked if she could take a photo with him and sign an autograph, and Vijay obliged. Shortly after, she asked if she could meet his parents, and Vijay agreed while continuing his shoot for Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen.
Sangeetha’s visit to Vijay’s family left a strong impression. During her second visit, Vijay’s father asked her if she liked Vijay. She remained silent, taken by surprise. Later, Vijay was asked if he was willing to marry her, and he requested a week to decide. When asked again by his father SA Chandrasekhar, Vijay agreed and left the final decision to his parents. After his parents felt Sangeetha was the right match, Vijay accepted that he had fallen in love with her.

It is reported that she comes from a Sri Lankan Tamil family with a business background who eventually migrated to the United Kingdom. The couple has two children: son Jason Sanjay and daughter Dhivya Saasha. Jason Sanjay is preparing for his debut as a film director with Sigma and previously appeared in Vettaikkaaran. Dhivya Saasha also appeared alongside Vijay in Theri.
