What is the story about?
What
was previously known as Project Kuniper and gained limelight a few months ago, has been officially announced as Amazon Leo. The Leo in its name refers to Low-Earth Orbit up to 2000 kilometres, where Amazon has deployed around 153 satellites. The mission of Amazon Leo is to offer stable internet access to underserved communities across different countries, especially covering remote areas. For those who are unaware, Amazon Leo is a part of Amazon's Devices and Services division that consists of Echo, Kindle, and more. The project is being headquartered in Redmond, Washington clubbed with a satellite production facility in Kirkland. The facility can manage the manufacturing of up to five satellites per day.

The Amazon Leo includes three components - satellites, customer terminals, and ground infrastructure. Starting with ground infrastructure, it consists of gateway antennas for secure data transmission and TT&C (telemetry, tracking, and control) antennas that look after satellite operations and health. The infrastructure also helps in linking to the internet or private networks to offer wide-area global coverage.Satellites by Amazon are already in low Earth orbit, relaying data between gateway antennas and users. Apart from that, Customer terminals, including Leo Pro, Leo Ultra, and Leo Nano, provide connectivity to end users. Until now, Amazon has secured more than 80 launch contracts, which could be dubbed the largest commercial launch procurement in history. As for the speeds, different terminals will be offering varying speeds - Leo Nano will offer up to 100Mbps, Leo Pro will offer up to 400Mbps, and Leo Ultra will offer up to 1Gbps. Coming to the launch timeline, it is being said that Amazon Leo will start working for selected enterprise customers by late 2025, with expanded availability planned for 2026.
