Geoffrey Hinton, also known as the godfather of AI, has always been active when it comes to criticizing or praising AI. However, his latest statement comes as a stark reminder for humankind of how big a professional threat AI could become in the future. In an interview on CNN's State of the Union, Hinton said that AI is going to replace many, many jobs from different sectors, and this could begun in early 2026. Hinton said, 'We’re going to see AI get even better. It’s already extremely good. It’s already able to replace jobs in call centres, but it’s going to be able to replace many other jobs.' As mentioned by Hinton, AI in the future is going to replace a lot of blue-collar and white collar jobs because of its increasing ability to manage
complex tasks. Talking about the current scenario, AI is showing exponential growth in the field of software engineering. As explained by Hinton, AI will be managing software engineering projects that currently need months of human effort. He warned, 'Then there will be very few people needed.' That's not it, Hinton has also shared his concerns related to the growing reasoning ability of AI and along with deceiving tactics. Hinton says that AI is moving at a rapid pace in areas like strategic thinking and manipulation. Hinton said, 'I am more worried than I was.' He further added, 'If it believes you’re trying to get rid of it, it will make plans to deceive you so you don’t get rid of it.' Now, as for the ground reality, we cannot say that AI will replace all the jobs in 2026 or in the next two to three years, but yes, a lot of job roles have already been impacted due to the same, and we can expect it to eat up more jobs in the future. One report related to AI layoffs suggested that the companies hired a lot of people in the post-COVID era and are now using the excuse of AI to cut short on the numbers.
