At present, the record for the most goals scored in a single season of the FIFA World Cup stands in the name of France’s Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in six matches in 1958. To break the record, one player will have to score at least two goals in seven or eight matches. However, it depends on whether his team reaches the semi-final or the final round. Brazil’s late great Pelé was the youngest player to debut in the World Cup at 17 years and 239 days, against Wales in 1958. In 1994, Russia’s Oleg Salenko scored five goals against Cameroon in a group-stage match, which ended 6-1. Given how competitive world football has become nowadays, even the likes of Messi and Ronaldo have never managed five goals in a single game across the six World Cups. Therefore, we believe no player can break this record in the 2026 edition. After all, to break the record, the player will have to score six goals single-handedly.

In the 1982 World Cup, Hungary defeated El Salvador 10-1, the largest goal margin in a single match. Given how competitive teams are these days, we do not want any team to concede 11 goals in a game. Having said that, Germany came pretty close to breaking the record in 2014 against Brazil, but Hungary’s achievement remains intact to date.
