Despite the addition of more teams and players, some historic World Cup records are expected to remain intact
Search for ‘records’ and ‘FIFA World Cup’
on a search engine together, and you will come across multiple articles that will tell you how many records will be shattered in the FIFA World Cup 2026. However, you will not find many articles that present unique records likely to remain intact despite the addition of more teams and players.
Here are a few historic records that this World Cup edition is unlikely to break.
Most goals in an edition

That is the most goals scored by a player in a single World Cup tournament ⚽️🔥

At present, the record for the most goals scored in a single season of the FIFA World Cup stands in the name of France’s Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in six matches in 1958. To break the record, one player will have to score at least two goals in seven or eight matches. However, it depends on whether his team reaches the semi-final or the final round. For the record, this season, a team will play eight matches in total if it reaches the final.
Youngest goalscorer

Brazil’s late great Pelé was the youngest player to debut in the World Cup at 17 years and 239 days, against Wales in 1958. No player in the upcoming World Cup is younger than he was when he set the record, so it will remain intact. For the record, Pele bid goodbye to the world and left for his heavenly abode in 2022.
Most goals in a match

In 1994, Russia’s Oleg Salenko scored five goals against Cameroon in a group-stage match, which ended 6-1. Given how competitive world football has become nowadays, even the likes of Messi and Ronaldo have never managed five goals in a single game across the six World Cups. Therefore, we believe no player can break this record in the 2026 edition. After all, to break the record, the player will have to score six goals single-handedly.

In the 1982 World Cup, Hungary defeated El Salvador 10-1, the largest goal margin in a single match. Given how competitive teams are these days, we do not want any team to concede 11 goals in a game. Having said that, Germany came pretty close to breaking the record in 2014 against Brazil, but Hungary’s achievement remains intact to date.

Brazil holds the record for the most World Cup titles, i.e., five. Given that Germany has four and Italy is not part of the tournament, no country will be able to surpass Brazil. Germany will equal Brazil's record if they win the title, but they won't exceed it.
