Sukhothai, literally means “Dawn of Happiness”, is a culturally
as well as historically significant town in the northern part of Thailand filled with a lot of tourist attractions. Founded by King Ramkhamhaeng, it served as the first capital of Siam during 13th century. The town is referred to as the “Cradle of Thai Civilization” as it’s the actual birthplace of the art, architecture, language etc. of Thailand. As Sukhothai is home to a number of striking places, here we have listed down the ones which are simply unmissable.
Sukhothai Historical Park
Sukhothai Historical Park spreads over a large area which is divided into five major zones. There are ancient architecture, parks, palaces, and more that reflect the rich history of the entire country. Also, it’s home to a number of ponds, lakes and trees offering tranquility to the visitors. The most important highlights of this site are Wat Mahathat, Wat Si Sawai, Wat Sa Si etc. Just rent a bicycle and take a tour across the entire park.
Ramkhamhaeng National Museum
One must visit Ramkhamhaeng National Museum to look for the ancient ruins of Sukhothai and the neighbouring sites. Features numerous artifacts, antiques, remnants etc., this museum shows the culture and tradition of Thai people during the ancient era. Spare at least 2-3 hours to explore the entire museum.
Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary
Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary is an amazing place where one can spend some time interacting with elephants in their natural habitat. Founded in 2006, the sanctuary rescues elephants from various fields and treats them with utmost care. Here, the animals live their life freely and learn numerous social skills.
Sukhothai Saturday Night Market
Sukhothai Saturday Night Market remains open on every Saturday in the Nikorn Kasem Road. From 5 pm onwards, this street turns literally into a festival as many vendors line up along the road and attract local residents as well as tourists. It spreads over five hundred meter and is mostly famous for mouth-watering street food including sweet, spicy food, salad, many dishes and more.
Also, Sukhothai is home to a number of fine restaurants where you can enjoy authentic Thai dishes.
