India not only won the World Cup but also, in the course, shattered multiple trophies
Gautam Gambhir’s Men in Blue shut all the critics up as they thrashed
New Zealand in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The Indian side not only won the trophy but also shattered several records as a unit, while the same players set individual records.
In the following paragraphs, check out the long list of records that were broken on the evening of March 8 in Ahmedabad.
Records as a team
The Men in Blue became the first team ever to retain the T20 World Cup by winning it back-to-back. Further, India also became the first team to win three ICC T20 World Cups, beating England and the West Indies in the process.

India defeated New Zealand by a margin of 96 runs, which is the team’s largest victory by runs in the men’s T20 World Cup. Furthermore, India and New Zealand have the highest aggregate in a men’s T20 World Cup match, with 414 runs produced across the two innings.
The Indian side also recorded the highest total ever in a men’s T20 World Cup final, scoring 255 runs.

At the individual level for India, Sanju Samson is one of the players who racked up several records in his name. The records are –
- Highest score by an Indian (97 against the West Indies) in a men’s T20 World Cup chase.
- Samson’s 89 runs became the highest individual score ever in the tournament’s history.
- With 24 sixes, he made the most sixes by a batter in a single edition.
- Samson went past Virat Kohli’s record of 319 runs scored by an Indian in a single edition. The Indian opener in this edition scored 321 runs.
Bumrah at the top

By grabbing four wickets in the final, Jasprit Bumrah became India’s top wicket taker in the World Cup with 40 scalps in 26 matches. He also registered the best figure as a pacer in the World Cup summit clashes with 4/15, whereas the best remains in the name of Ajantha Mendis for his 4/12.

Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan became the first three players ever in a team to hit three 50s during a T20 World Cup game. Another record was created by Samson and Sharma, who put on a 50-run partnership for the first wicket in a T20 World Cup, surpassing the previous record held by Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan for PAK, who scored 48 against Sri Lanka in the 2009 final.

Overall, India had a terrific outing, which included several hiccups and experiments, but at the end of the day, the Men in Blue supported each other and, by doing so, reached the trophy despite all the criticism. Last but not least, one must not forget to appreciate Gautam Gambhir, who has been at the receiving end since he took over the team.
