The Billion-Tree Ambition
On the surface, it’s one of the most positive environmental stories on the planet. India, the world's most populous nation, has embraced afforestation with staggering enthusiasm. Government programs aim to restore vast tracts of degraded land, often by
setting records for planting the most saplings in a single day. Spiritual leaders like Sadhguru have launched massive, high-profile campaigns such as “Cauvery Calling,” raising millions to plant billions of trees along riverbanks. These initiatives tap into a simple, powerful idea: planting a tree is a direct, personal way to heal the planet. The message resonates deeply, promoted by Bollywood stars and powered by social media, creating a national “eco-mood” built on the tangible act of putting a sapling in the ground. For a country facing severe environmental challenges, from air pollution to water scarcity, these campaigns offer a sense of hope and active participation.
The Problem with Monoculture
Here’s where the feel-good story gets complicated. Ecologists and environmental scientists are raising a critical question: are we planting trees, or are we creating forests? The answer, they warn, is often the former. Many large-scale plantation drives prioritize speed and scale, leading to the use of a single, fast-growing species—a practice known as monoculture. Rows upon rows of eucalyptus or acacia are not the same as a biodiverse, native forest. These non-native trees can act as biological deserts, failing to support local insects, birds, and other wildlife. Furthermore, species like eucalyptus are notoriously thirsty, often depleting already scarce groundwater resources in arid regions, ironically making water problems worse. A true forest is a complex, interconnected ecosystem of diverse native species, undergrowth, fungi, and wildlife that has evolved over millennia. A monoculture plantation is more like an agricultural crop of trees, and it can’t provide the same ecological benefits.
The Numbers Game
The focus on hitting massive planting targets creates another problem: a numbers game that prioritizes planting over survival. A photo-op of a politician or celebrity planting a sapling is great for PR, but what happens a year later? Often, very little. Without proper soil analysis, species selection, and long-term care—including watering, protection from grazing animals, and monitoring—the survival rate of these mass-planted saplings can be shockingly low. Some reports have found survival rates below 20%. The headline-grabbing number of “one billion trees planted” means little if 800 million of them are dead within a few years. Critics argue that the political and social capital is earned at the moment of planting, with little incentive for the costly, unglamorous, long-term work of ensuring a sapling grows into a mature tree. This turns a potential climate solution into a temporary, and often wasteful, gesture.
Protecting What's Already There
Perhaps the most significant critique is that the intense focus on planting new trees can serve as a distraction from a more urgent task: protecting India’s existing, old-growth forests. These ancient ecosystems are invaluable, irreplaceable carbon sinks and biodiversity hotspots. Yet, they are frequently threatened by infrastructure projects, mining, and agricultural expansion. Some government policies in India even allow for forest land to be cleared for development projects, with the promise of “compensatory afforestation” elsewhere. But as scientists point out, you cannot replace a 500-year-old natural forest by planting a field of saplings. The carbon stored, the biodiversity supported, and the ecological services provided by a mature forest are simply not comparable. The obsession with planting, critics say, creates a dangerous illusion that we can destroy nature in one place and simply recreate it in another.
