What Are Airport Facilitation Deals?
At its core, “airport facilitation” is about making the journey from curb to gate, and from landing to exit, as smooth as possible. For most travelers in U.S., this means enrolling in a Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) run by the government. These programs
require a background check and an in-person interview in exchange for access to expedited security and customs lanes. While they come with a fee, their benefits can be a game-changer, especially for younger travelers looking to maximize their time and minimize stress, whether they're studying abroad, taking a gap year, or just heading home for the holidays.
For Domestic Trips: TSA PreCheck
TSA PreCheck is the most common and accessible option for travelers who primarily fly within the United States. For a fee that covers a five-year membership, approved members get access to a separate, much faster security lane. The benefits are significant: you don’t have to remove your shoes, belts, or light jackets, and you can leave laptops and compliant liquids inside your carry-on bag. For a college student flying back and forth for breaks or a young professional taking frequent weekend trips, the time saved adds up quickly. The application is straightforward: an online form followed by a short, 10-minute appointment at an enrollment center that includes fingerprinting. With over 200 airlines and 800 enrollment centers, it's a widely available tool for reclaiming your sanity at the airport.
For International Travel: Global Entry
If your travel plans include trips outside the U.S., Global Entry is the superior choice. It includes all the benefits of TSA PreCheck for domestic flights, but its main feature is expedited processing when you return to the United States. Instead of waiting in long customs and immigration lines, members head to a kiosk, scan their passport or face, answer a few questions on-screen, and are often on their way in minutes. For a student returning from a semester abroad or a backpacker finishing a multi-country tour, this swift re-entry is a welcome relief after a long-haul flight. The application process is more rigorous, requiring a more detailed online application and a formal interview with a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer. However, at only a slightly higher cost than PreCheck for a five-year membership, the added international benefit makes it a worthwhile investment for anyone with a passport.
The Private Option: CLEAR
Unlike the government-run TTPs, CLEAR is a private, subscription-based service that uses biometrics (your eyes and fingerprints) to verify your identity. It allows you to skip the first part of the security process: the line to get your ID and boarding pass checked by a TSA agent. After being verified at a CLEAR pod, an ambassador escorts you directly to the physical screening. It’s important to note that CLEAR does not replace TSA PreCheck. In fact, they work best together. A member with both can use CLEAR to bypass the ID line and then enter the PreCheck lane for the expedited physical screening. CLEAR is more expensive and available at fewer airports, but for young travelers based out of a major hub with frequent delays, it can be the ultimate time-saver.
Making It Affordable
The main barrier for many young travelers is the upfront cost. Thankfully, there are ways to offset it. A wide range of travel-focused credit cards now offer statement credits that completely cover the application fee for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. While these cards often have an annual fee, the other perks—like airline miles or lounge access—can make it a good deal for a frequent flyer. Some student-oriented bank accounts or travel companies also run occasional promotions. Before paying out of pocket, it’s worth checking if a credit card you or a parent already has offers this benefit. It’s a simple way to get a five-year travel upgrade for free.
