Meet Your New Favorite Plant
First, let’s get acquainted. The star of this project is *Cestrum nocturnum*, commonly known as night-blooming jasmine, night-blooming jessamine, or Queen of the Night. Despite the name, it's not a true jasmine; it’s actually a member of the nightshade
family, related to tomatoes and peppers. Its magic lies in its small, tubular, greenish-white flowers that open at night to release one of the most powerful and enchanting scents in the plant world. It’s a fast-growing, shrubby plant that thrives in warmth and sun, making it a perfect candidate for a large container. One important note for pet owners: all parts of the plant, especially the berries, are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, so be sure to place it out of reach of curious pets.
Your Weekend Shopping List
This project is refreshingly simple. Before you start, gather your materials. You’ll find most of these items at any local nursery or garden center. - **One Night-Blooming Jasmine Plant:** Look for a healthy-looking plant with green leaves and no signs of pests or disease. A small starter plant (in a 1-gallon pot) is perfect. - **A Large Container:** Choose a pot that is at least 18-20 inches in diameter and has drainage holes. This gives the plant’s roots room to grow. Terracotta is great for airflow, but a sturdy plastic or ceramic pot works well too. - **Quality Potting Mix:** Don't use garden soil, which becomes compacted in pots. Buy a high-quality, all-purpose potting mix designed for containers. One large bag should be plenty. - **A Saucer:** Place a saucer under the pot to catch excess water and protect your balcony floor.
Finding the Perfect Spot
The headline says it all: a sunny balcony is key. Night-blooming jasmine needs at least six hours of direct sunlight per day to produce the energy required for its fragrant blooms. An east-facing balcony that gets morning sun or a south- or west-facing one with strong afternoon light is ideal. Before you plant, place the empty pot in its intended location to make sure it fits and won't be a tripping hazard. Remember that a pot filled with soil and a watered plant is very heavy, so it’s best to decide on its permanent home before you fill it.
The Simple Planting Process
With your materials gathered, it’s time for the fun part. Fill your chosen container about two-thirds full with the potting mix. Gently remove the night-blooming jasmine from its nursery pot by squeezing the sides and carefully sliding it out. Don’t pull it by the stem. Place the plant in the center of the new pot. The top of its root ball should sit about an inch or two below the rim of the pot. Fill in the surrounding space with more potting mix, gently firming it down to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly until you see water draining from the bottom holes. This helps settle the soil and hydrate the roots.
Water, Food, and Fragrant Rewards
Caring for your new plant is straightforward. In a sunny, warm location, a potted *Cestrum nocturnum* will be thirsty. Check the soil every couple of days by sticking your finger an inch deep; if it’s dry, it’s time to water. Water deeply until it runs out the bottom. During the growing season (spring and summer), you can encourage more blooms by feeding it with a balanced liquid fertilizer every few weeks, following the product instructions. The plant typically blooms in cycles throughout the warm months. You'll notice the slender flowers during the day, and as evening approaches, they’ll open and release their incredible perfume. The scent is strongest after dark, filling your entire balcony and drifting into your home through open windows.
