With Avatar: Fire and Ash arriving early, the other four films face a tough challenge to secure screens and footfall. But history has shown that multiple films can coexist if the content is strong. From Kartik Aaryan’s charm to Mohanlal’s mass appeal and Sriram Raghavan’s storytelling, take a look at the contenders fighting for screen space this December.
Avatar: Fire and Ash (December 19): James Cameron's sci-fi epic arrives a week early, set to dominate the IMAX and premium format screens. The upcoming film will introduce the ‘Ash People’ (Fire Na'vi), adding a darker and more intense tone to the franchise. It stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang in key roles. Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), the previous instalment, collected approximately ₹391.4 Cr (India Net), surpassing huge Bollywood blockbusters.
Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu (December 25): Kartik Aaryan's upcoming release with Dharma Productions is a Gen-Z rom-com with a '90s soul. Directed by Sameer Vidwans, the film marks a big-screen reunion of Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, after their 2019 hit Pati Patni Aur Woh. The upcoming film also features Neena Gupta and Jackie Shroff.
Ikkis (December 25): Sriram Raghavan's biopic of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, the youngest Param Vir Chakra recipient, Ikkis stars Agastya Nanda, Dharmendra and Jaideep Ahlawat. Khetarpal was killed in combat at the age of 21 during the Battle of Basantar in the 1971 Indo-Pak War. He was posthumously honoured with the Param Vir Chakra, becoming the youngest recipient of India's highest military medal at the time.
Vrusshabha (December 25): Directed by Nanda Kishore, Mohanlal's Pan-India film is an epic action entertainer. This film marks the big Pan-India debut for Shanaya Kapoor and Zahrah S Khan. The film was earlier set to release on October 16, but it will now hit the theatres on December 25. It is produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor under the banners of Balaji Telefilms and AVS Studios. The project also involves Connekkt Media, Abhishek Vyas Studios, and Aashirvad Cinemas as production partners.
Anaconda (December 25): A meta-comedic reimagining of the 1997 cult classic, Anaconda stars Jack Black, Paul Rudd, Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, Daniela Melchior, and Selton Mello. Directed by Tom Gormican, the upcoming film promises a fresh twist on the genre. The story reportedly follows a group of friends facing midlife crises who decide to remake their favourite movie, but encounter unexpected events when they enter the jungle.
