Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday declared Krishnavataram Part-1: The Heart (Hridayam) tax-free in the state after attending a special screening of the film at Lok Bhavan in Lucknow.
The screening was organised following theexpansion of the Uttar Pradesh cabinet earlier in the day and was attended by Governor Anandiben Patel, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, along with several cabinet ministers and elected representatives.
"The film Krishnavataram will be tax-free in Uttar Pradesh," Yogi announced the decision on the social media platform X.
"Today, in the dignified presence of Governor Anandi Ben Patel Ji, I participated in the special screening of the Hindi film Krishnavataram, based on the divine glory of Yogeshwar Lord Shri Krishna Ji, held in Lucknow with the members of the Cabinet. On this occasion, the artists associated with the film were also honored," he wrote.
Yogi also congratulated the cast and makers of the film, saying, "Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to all members associated with the film."
The decision comes amid the film, which is based on Lord Krishna, has gained positive response from audiences. Reports state that the auditorium echoed with chants of "Krishna-Krishna" and "Radhe-Radhe" during the screening. Yogi also went on stage and congratulated the cast and crew of the film.
With the tax-free status, people in Uttar Pradesh will now be able to watch the film at lower ticket prices. The move is expected to help bring more viewers to theatres.
During the screening, Yogi also asked the Information Department to organise special shows of the film in every district so that children and young people can learn more about Indian culture and heritage.
Helmed by Hardik Gajjar, produced by Sajan Raj Kurup, Shobha Sant and Poonam Shroff Gajjar, the film is the first part of a planned three-film franchise.
Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart (Hridayam), which released on May 7, opened at the box office with ₹42 lakh and recorded an occupancy rate of around 18%. The film saw strong growth over the next few days. On Day 2, it earned ₹1.15 crore, followed by ₹2.25 crore on Day 3. On Sunday, the film collected around ₹3.5 crore, taking the total box office collection to around ₹7.32 crore.
The story revolves around the events that took place after Lord Krishna separated from Radha and his life with his consorts Rukmini and Sathyabhama.
Siddharth Gupta plays Lord Krishna, while Sushmitha Bhat stars as Radha, Nivaashiyni Krishnan plays Rukmini, and Sanskruti Jayana essays the role of Sathyabhama. The film also features Jantee Hazarika, Karthik Jayaram, Amanjot Singh and Smrithi Srikanth in important roles.
