Initially screened on October 1, coinciding with the Ayudha Pooja weekend, the film is Dhanush's 52nd acting project and his fourth directorial endeavour.
With a stellar supporting cast that includes Arun Vijay, Rajkiran, Samuthirakani, Shalini Pandey, Prakash Raj, Sathyaraj, and others, the movie brings Dhanush and actress Nithya Menen back together after their previous collaboration.
The story centres on the protagonist, Murugan (Dhanush), a young man who leaves his village to pursue higher ambitions, only to be driven to return home and take up his family’s legacy in the idli restaurant business. It also addresses themes of community, identity, and responsibility.
Idli Kadaiwill be accessible in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, among other languages, expanding its audience to include people across the country.
According to Sacnilk statistics, Idli Kadai made an estimated ₹59 crore domestically and ₹71.75 crore worldwide, a decent showing at the box office. However, the movie failed to break into the top ten list of Tamil cinema's biggest-grossing films this year.
Idli Kadai has raised high expectations among fans as it is the first movie to reunite the Dhanush-Nithya Menon duo since
Idli Kadai's appearance on Netflix, with its streaming release date confirmed, aims to prolong the film's lifecycle and possibly attract a wider audience than it did in theatres.
Earlier, Dhanush's bilingual feature Kuberaa reportedly grossed between ₹115 and 132 crore globally.
Dhanush's last directorial, Nilavukku Enmel Ennadi Kobam, was a box office failure and is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
