What is the story about?
Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi's courtroom drama Haq debuted on November 7 to mostly positive reviews. Despite having a strong topical subject and critical support, the movie got off to a poor start at the box office.
According to box-office tracker Sacnilk,Haq collected approximately ₹1.65 crore net in India on its opening day. The movie's occupancy rates were disappointing, averaging less than 10% for Friday's Hindi 2D shows. The lowest morning occupancy was around 5.66%, while night shows peaked at approximately 16.50%.
The weak opening seems to have been caused by a number of factors. The historic Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum case served as the inspiration for Suparn Verma's film, which might have limited mass-commercial appeal despite its importance.
Critics have praised the film's content and performances, particularly those of Yami Gautam as Shazia Bano. She was praised in one review for her ‘well-measured portrayal’ of a woman defying social and legal structures.
This is apparently Yami Gautam's second-lowest opening score in ten years, which puts more pressure on the movie's theatrical run. Strong word-of-mouth was expected to increase occupancy and receipts over the weekend, according to distributors and analysts. The film might gross ₹2-3 crore on day two and possibly reach around ₹5 crore throughout the first weekend.
About Haq
The film centres on Shazia (Yami Gautam Dhar), an uneducated, homely woman who marries successful advocate Abbas Khan (Emraan Hashmi). Abbas unexpectedly brings a second wife home one day. Shortly after, he uses triple talaq to dissolve his marriage with Shazia. The remaining part of the movie centres on Shazia's legal battle for her rights.
Emraan Hashmi's last film - Tejas Vijay Deoskar's Ground Zero - made ₹6.7 crore at the box office during its run. The movie debuted at ₹1.15 crore. Yami Gautam's latest film,
