What is the story about?
Sydney Sweeney is set to return to the big screen with The Housemaid's Secret, slated for a December 2027 theatrical release. It is set to hit the theatres on December 17, 2027, exactly two years after the first film.
The upcoming film is a sequel to The Housemaid and is based on the 2022 bestselling novel by Freida McFadden. Even though the first part opened with a modest $19 million, it ended up earning nearly $400 million worldwide on a $35 million budget.
Backed by Lionsgate, the movie is once again being positioned for a Christmas window release.
"When one door closes… The Housemaid’s Secret: coming to theaters December 17, 2027," the makers wrote on social media platform X.
It will clash with big films such as Avengers: Secret Wars and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The makers are planning to start pre-sales of The Housemaid 2 at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film has expanded its cast, with Kirsten Dunst joining Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone. Director Paul Feig returns to helm the sequel and will also produce under his banner Pretty Dangerous Pictures alongside longtime collaborator Laura Fischer.
Additional producers include Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, with Sweeney also attached as a producer through her Fifty-Fifty Films.
The Housemaid's Secret tells the story of Millie, played bySweeney, who takes a job cleaning a house for a woman she is never allowed to see. When Millie investigates a locked door in the house, she uncovers dark secrets even more shocking than her own past.
Lionsgate is aiming to turn The Housemaid into a full film franchise. Following the success of The Housemaid and its upcoming sequel, the studio plans to adapt more of McFadden's works, including the third novel The Housemaid Is Watching and the short story The Housemaid's Wedding.
