What is the story about?
The Madras High Court has stepped in to protect the upcoming Telugu film Peddi from online piracy before its theatrical release. The court has issued an anti-piracy injunction against the unlawful upload, copying, transmission, or release of the movie on the internet.
The interim order was passed by a vacation bench of Justice V Lakshminarayanan following a plea filed by the film’s producer seeking protection against copyright infringement, Bar and Bench reported.
The hearing reportedly took place late on Wednesday evening as the makers moved the HC seeking a permanent injunction against illegal uploads.
Court Restrains Illegal Uploads
The makers of the film had petitioned the High Court for a permanent injunction against many defendants and unidentified individuals in order to prevent them from unlawfully sharing the movie online or assisting with its duplication, transmission, distribution, or release.
After reviewing the documents placed before it, the Court acknowledged that the production house held the copyright over the film and observed that piracy would cause severe financial losses. “In the event, unauthorizedly, the movie is released over internet, the plaintiff would be put to serious loss and prejudice,” it noted.
‘Ashok Kumar’ Order Issued
The bench also granted what is commonly known as an “Ashok Kumar order”. Such orders are issued against unknown persons to prevent anticipated copyright violations, especially in situations where the identities of potential offenders are not yet known.
Interim Relief For Four Weeks
The High Court granted the interim injunction for a period of four weeks and posted the matter for further hearing thereafter.
