Born on January 4, 1983, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, Tamang lost his father early in life. To support his family, he joined the Kolkata Police as a constable, where he also pursued music through the police orchestra. Tamang’s victory on Indian Idol in 2007 was a watershed moment for the Gorkha and Nepali-speaking communities, earning him recognition across Darjeeling, the Terai, Dooars, Sikkim, the Northeast, and beyond. The win elevated not just his career but also the visibility of Nepali music on a national stage.
Following his success on television, he released the album Dhanyavad and performed both in India and internationally. He transitioned into acting, making his debut with the Nepali film Gorkha Paltan in 2010, and later appearing in films including Angalo Yo Maya Ko, Kina Maya Ma, Nishani, Pardesi, and Kina Mayama. On Indian television, he featured in Amber Dhara and played the role of Daniel Lecho in Paatal Lok Season 2.
