What is the story about?
Veteran actor Dharmendra has been posthumously conferred with the Padma Vibhushan at the Padma Awards 2026, recognising his immense contribution to Indian cinema. The honour was announced following the actor’s death last year.
Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol, the legendary star began his film journey in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere at the age of 24. In the early years of his career, he featured in supporting roles in successful films such as Bandini, Ayee Milan Ki Bela and Kaajal. His breakthrough as a bankable leading man came with the 1965 war film
Haqeeqat.
Dharmendra went on to establish himself as one of Hindi cinema’s most enduring stars, delivering memorable performances in films including Anupama, Aadmi Aur Insaan, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Seeta Aur Geeta , Sholay, Yaadon Ki Baaraat and Dharam Veer. His final on-screen appearance was in Ikkis, which released in theatres earlier this year.
Dharmendra passed away on November 24 last year at his Mumbai residence at the age of 89. Earlier that month, he had been discharged from Breach Candy Hospital following a health scare and was recuperating at home. His last rites were performed in Mumbai on November 25.
