What is the story about?
The Melania Trump documentary "Melania" earned an estimated $7 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend in the United States, marking the strongest documentary debut in more than a decade, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
The film, promoted by President Donald Trump as "a must watch," was released by Amazon MGM Studios in 1,778 theatres. Going into the weekend, industry estimates had projected earnings between $3 million and $5 million.
Amazon reportedly paid $40 million to acquire the documentary and spent an additional $35 million on marketing, making it one of the most expensive documentaries ever made. The film is directed by Brett Ratner, his first project since multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct in 2017. Ratner has denied the allegations.
The documentary follows Melania Trump over 20 days in January, leading up to Donald Trump’s second inauguration. It did not screen in advance for critics and received reviews only after its release.

On Thursday, Trump hosted a premiere of the film at the Kennedy Center, attended by Cabinet members and members of Congress. A week earlier, the White House also hosted a black-tie preview attended by Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy, Apple chief executive Tim Cook, and former boxer Mike Tyson.
Despite negative critical reviews, the audience response was more positive. The film received an "A" CinemaScore, with ticket buyers largely aged 55 and above (72%), female (72%), and white (75%). The movie performed best in southern states, including Florida and Texas.
"Melania" will stream on Prime Video after its theatrical run. Shortly before release, South African distributor Filmfinity said it would no longer distribute the film, citing "recent developments."
