What is the story about?
It's been over a century since the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was founded, and now its story will be told on the big screen. The film, titled Shatak: Sangh Ke 100 Varsh, was officially announced at a Delhi event recently.
Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the news, by writing: “'SHATAK' ANNOUNCED – A FILM ON THE 100-YEAR JOURNEY OF RSS... TheRashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh [#RSS] has completed 100 years, marking a significant milestone in its history. A feature film titled #Shatak: Sangh Ke 100 Varsh has been officially announced... An Ada 360 Degree LLP presentation, #Shatak is scheduled for a theatrical release this year.”
Producer Vir Kapur and co-producer Aashish Tiwari, working under the auspices of ADA 360 Degree LLP, revealed the feature film Shatak on Instagram on January 10. “Proud to produce, Shatak the epic saga of RSS’s 100 years of selfless sacrifice, relentless hustle, and unyielding bravery. A tribute to the souls who forged our nation’s unbreakable spirit,” Kapur wrote in the caption.
The film, directed by Aashish Mall, seeks to capture the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's century-long development. It will depict RSS’s journey from Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar's founding of the group in Nagpur in 1925 to its growth into a national volunteer organisation with significant cultural and social impact throughout India.
Shatak's first anthem, Bhagwa Hai Apni Pehchaan, performed by renowned singer Sukhwinder Singh, was launched during an inaugural ceremony in New Delhi, under the supervision of RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat.
Sunny Inder wrote the song and Rakesh Kumar Pal wrote the lyrics, which invoke ideas of sacrifice, discipline and national pride.
Speaking at the ceremony, Bhagwat addressed the life and legacy of RSS founder Dr Hedgewar, characterising him as ‘a patriot by birth.’ Dr Hedgewar committed his life to service and national unity despite the early pain of losing both of his parents at the age of 11.
Bhagwat underlined that the movie Shatak aims to present ‘untold stories’ about Hedgewar's character and leadership as well as more general insights into the organisation's contributions to India's social and cultural fabric.
“Dr Hedgewar's life embodied the RSS spirit—Bharat first, always,” Bhagwat said at the event, adding that his steadfast patriotism and strength are shown in the film Shatak and its song Bhagwa Hai Apni Pehchaan.
“RSS isn’t changing; it’s evolving, staying true to its roots. This film unveils untold stories, highlighting Dr Hedgewar’s ability to unite people and face life’s challenges with equanimity,” Bhagwat added.
Although industry indications point to a 2026 theatrical debut, the Shatak team has not yet disclosed casting decisions or an official release date.
