What is the story about?
Director Buchi Babu Sana has issued an apology after his latest release, Peddi, faced severe backlash over the portrayal of the female lead, Janhvi Kapoor. She plays Achiyyamma in the film, which also stars Ram Charan.
Fans accused the makers of objectifying her and mishandling the character.
In an elaborate post on X, he wrote, "As a filmmaker, I believe cinema should entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences. It should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected. We have heard the feedback regarding certain scenes in Peddi and have taken it seriously."
"I have always had immense respect for women, both on and off screen, and it was never our intention to objectify or disrespect any female character. If any part of the film has been perceived that way, we respect those sentiments, understand the concerns being raised, and sincerely apologise," he added. "After reviewing the feedback, we have decided to make changes to the concerned portions."
Social media platforms have been flooded with criticism from fans who accused the film of "objectifying" Janhvi’s character.
A section of social media users said that the actions of Ram Charan's character, Peddi, towards Achiyamma appeared inappropriate.
One user wrote, "After watching Peddi, you can't help but feel pity for Janhvi Kapoor. Sridevi would have never allowed her to act in such B-grade films in the South."
Another wrote, "Janhvi Kapoor is a brilliant actress and it's a pity that she's not being used properly by any film industry. Peddi is such a farce when it comes to her character. Cut her entire role and the movie could still progress without her. Leaving aside the glamour part, her only purpose in the plot is to become the trigger for a fight which actually could have been any other trivial reason. Her character and her entire role was not needed for that one trigger. Also what was that scene before the chikri song…"
Another X user criticised Buchi Babu Sana and wrote, "I don’t care if heroine beauty is shown or how she walks but my biggest issue in the movie was how Hero RC abuses heroine and she falls in love for that. Sorry Buchi Babu Sana, I’ll oppose the movie strongly. It’s simply not acceptable."
In the middle of this, a video of Janhvi opening up about the issue of "objectification" and "consent" has resurfaced.
Speaking on Raj Shamani's podcast, Janhvi said that "sexualising without consent bothers" her.
