What is the story about?
Asha Bhosle, one of the most versatile and prolific voices in Indian music, has died at the age of 92 on Sunday, April 12. The veteran singer had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on April 11 and was undergoing treatment in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) unit. Dr Pratit Samdani of the hospital said the singer passed away due to multi-organ failure.
Born on September 8, 1933, into a musical family, she was the daughter of Deenanath Mangeshkar and the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar. Her siblings — Meena Khadikar, Usha Mangeshkar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar — were also associated with music.
With a career spanning over seven decades, she recorded thousands of songs across multiple languages and genres, earning a place among the most celebrated playback singers in the country. By her own account, she had recorded over 12,000 songs in around 20 languages, for which she was officially recognised by the Guinness World Records in 2011 as the most recorded artist in music history.
Bhosle began singing at a young age, recording her first song for the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943). She later sang "Sawan Aya" for the Hindi film Chunariya (1948), beginning a career that went on to define generations of Indian film music.

Over the decades, she collaborated with some of the most prominent composers in Indian music, including Shankar-Jaikishan, Sachin Dev Burman, R. D. Burman, O. P. Nayyar, Ilaiyaraaja, Bappi Lahiri and A. R. Rahman.
Her repertoire spanned ghazals, bhajans, romantic songs, cabaret numbers and film music, reflecting a range that set her apart in Indian cinema. She was widely regarded as one of the most versatile playback singers in the country.
Her career was recognised with several honours, including seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer, a Lifetime Achievement Award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. She also received two Grammy nominations in her career, making her as the first Indian singer to be nominated for a Grammy. She was nominated for Best World Music Album for Legacy (1997) and Best Contemporary World Music Album for 'You've Stolen My Heart' (2006).
Apart from music, Bhosle was also known for her culinary ventures, with restaurants bearing her name in Dubai and Kuwait. She also explored acting and appeared in the Marathi film Mai in 2013.
Often seen as having carved her own identity beyond the legacy of her sister, Bhosle built a distinct place in Indian music through experimentation, individuality and range.
With her death, Indian music loses a voice that defined generations. Her son, Anand Bhosle, said people can pay their last respects from 11 am tomorrow at Casa Grande in Lower Parel, where she lived. Her last rites will be performed at 4 pm at Shivaji Park.
