What is the story about?
Spotify has quietly discontinued its Premium Lite plan in India just six months after launch. Users first noticed the change after the plan disappeared from the app and websites.
This was previously the most affordable subscription tier in India, which was introduced in November 2025. Dubbed Spotify Premium Lite, it had provided ad-free music streaming at up to 160 kbps for ₹139 per month.
As per a report by MoneyControl, on Wednesday, the company removed the Spotify Premium Lite plan in India.
The company said, "We occasionally adapt the plans we offer, based on market opportunity and to provide choice to and value to users. In India, the Lite plan is no longer available."
Spotify plans in India: What’s changed
Alongside the removal of this popular plan, the company has also updated the prices of other Spotify Premium tiers in India, reducing the subscription fee of the Standard and the Student plans.
Notably, Spotify Premium Standard now costs ₹139 per month, the same price at which the Premium Lite plan was previously offered. The platform is also giving new Premium users an introductory offer of ₹99 for the first three months, after which the subscription will renew at ₹139 per month. Earlier, the Standard plan was priced at ₹199 per month.
Similarly, Spotify Premium Student is now available at ₹69 for the first two months and ₹69 per month thereafter. Its price has been reduced from₹ 99 per month. However, the features and benefits offered under the plan remain unchanged despite the price cut.
Both the Standard and Student plans allow users to stream music and audiobooks at up to 320 kbps without advertisements.
A Spotify spokesperson told MoneyControl, “We occasionally adapt the plans we offer, based on market opportunity and to provide choice to and value to users. In India, the Lite plan is no longer available."
However, Spotify has kept its top-tier Premium Platinum subscription (₹ 299 per month) unchanged, with no changes to its pricing or features.
These changes come at a time when India, one of Spotify’s top five markets by user base, is becoming increasingly important to the company’s growth plans. The move also aligns with Spotify’s broader efforts to improve margins and boost profitability.
Last year, Spotify co-CEOs Alex Norström and Gustav Söderström said the company sees strong growth opportunities in highly populated markets like India, which have a large and expanding digital audience.
