What is the story about?
Suriya and Trisha Krishnan’s Karuppu has entered the ₹300 crore club. The Tamil film has been minting money at the box office since it was released on May 15.
The makers of the fantasy courtroom drama celebrated the film collecting ₹300 crore globally with a special post.
Production house Dream Warrior Pictures shared a poster of the film on X and wrote, “The ONE @Suriya_offl’s biggest BLAST at the box office. #Karuppu grosses 300 crores worldwide, a mega blockbuster! A feast by @RJ_Balaji and team. A @SaiAbhyankkar Musical. A @dop_gkvishnu Visuals.”
Besides Trisha and Suriya,Karuppualso features RJ Balaji, Indrans and Anagha Maya Ravi in key roles. RJ Balaji has also helmed the fantasy courtroom drama. The film revolves around a lawyer who gets possessed by a deity and decides to weed out corruption in the judicial system.
Karuppu to get a sequel?
As the film continues its momentum at the box office, RJ Balaji has opened up on the possibility of a sequel. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor-director said that he does not want to rush into a sequel just to cash in on Karuppu’s success. However, he does have an idea about the potential direction he wants the next movie to take.
“If it happens, I want to do a sequel with 'God versus Politics.' Mookuthi Amman was ‘God versus Godman.’ This film is ‘My God versus My Lord’ (God versus the judiciary). Next film, I want it to be ‘God versus Politics,’” RJ Balaji revealed.
RJ Balaji feels that the political climate is not right for satire in Tamil Nadu right now, following actor-politician and state Chief Minister Vijay’s historical electoral win. He explained that people in the state voted for something and that had just started, highlighting that there was a lot of happiness and hope. “How do you make a satirical film in another two years, saying things are not okay?” he said.
He also added that while he has a few ‘interesting ideas’ for the sequel, he first wants himself and the film’s team to spend time with friends and family after taking over two years to make Karuppu.
