What is the story about?
Taylor Swift has once again outpaced fan theories, announcing her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, just as many were speculating she would revisit her debut record.
The pop superstar revealed
the news on her website early Tuesday, moments after a countdown clock struck 12:12 a.m. No release date was confirmed, but her site notes vinyl editions will ship before October 13. Among them is a limited-edition “Portofino orange glitter” vinyl, alongside a special cassette version now available for pre-order.
In classic Swift fashion, the rollout was filled with cryptic clues. On Monday, Taylor Nation — the pop star’s official marketing arm — posted a TikTok slideshow of 12 images, each featuring Swift in orange, with the
caption, “Thinking about when she said, ‘See you next era…’” The album’s limited-edition vinyl will be pressed in “Portofino orange glitter,” while a cassette version is also available for pre-order.
Fans also drew connections to the New Heights podcast — co-hosted by Swift’s boyfriend and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce — which posted an orange-hued teaser 12 minutes before the album reveal. Early Tuesday, the show confirmed Swift’s upcoming appearance, sharing a clip of her pulling the blurred album cover from a briefcase.
Swift has reportedly been working behind the scenes on the project, including filming a “secret” music video in Los Angeles last month. The production is said to have been so confidential that crew members were not allowed to hear the full song. Something that Swift is known for to keep her music from leaking.
The Life of a Showgirl follows 2024’s The Tortured Poets Department, unveiled during the Grammys and released amid her record-shattering Eras Tour, which grossed over $2.2
billion across five continents.
The new record also marks Swift’s first album since regaining full ownership of her music catalog. In May, she revealed she had purchased the rights from private equity firm Shamrock Capital, which had acquired them from Big Machine Records. Over the past four years, she has re-recorded four albums — Fearless, Red, Speak Now, and 1989 — each debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
While fans still await Reputation (Taylor’s Version), Swift has hinted that the
project will come only “when the time is right.”
